Definitions
Grades.
Capital English alphabets or letters assigned to a student’s academic achievement in a course or semester, such as A, B, C, D and F (Fail) are called grades. They indicate level of performance & correspond to a range or percentage of scores and a numerical grade. For understanding, consider following table.
Letter Grade | Grade Point | Performance | Range or Percentage |
A+ | 4 | Exceptional | 95-100% |
A | 3.7 | Excellent | 90–94% |
A- | 3.5 | Very good | 85–89% |
B+ | 3.3 | Good | 80–84% |
B | 3 | Above average | 75-79% |
B- | 2.7 | Average | 70-74% |
C+ | 2.5 | Satisfactory | 65-69% |
C | 2 | Pass | 60-64% |
D | 1 | Barely pass | 50-59% |
F | 0 | Fail | Below 50% |
Suffixes (Plus and minus) indicate higher & lower levels of performance within a letter grade; e.g., a B grade might have a range of scores between 70 and 84, with the plus and minus reflecting the levels of performance within that range.
Grade Points.
These are numerical values (4, 3, 2, 1 and 0) assigned to letter grades (A, B, C, D and F) in a CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) system. Commonly, A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, and F=0.
Grade points vary by regions or institutions.
4.0 scale is most common in US and Canada: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0.
10.0 scale is common in India and some Asian countries.
Credits.
Value or weight associated to a subject. The more credits a class has, the more important and time consuming it is.
Credit hours.
Approximate duration of teaching a subject per week. 4 credit hours class corresponds to 4 hours or 4 lectures / classes of weekly teaching in class, lab, workshop, assignments and practical work. Credits correspond to value of the subject whereas Credit Hours translate into the weekly instructional hours consumed for a subject. Normally a 4 credit hours subject would be divided into 3 hours of lecture inside the class and 1 hour of practical work in the lab.
Credit points.
Credit points are the numerical values calculated by multiplying the grade points achieved in a subject and its credit hours.
Credit points = Grade points x Credit hours.
For example,
Credit hours of a subject = 2,
Earned Grade Point = 3 (B),
Credit Points = 3 x 2 = 6.
Total Credits.
Summation of all the credit hours earned throughout the completed courses or subjects in a semester or degree program. Total credits are used to determine the graduation requirements of a certain degree.
For example:
1st semester has 10 credit hours.
2nd semester has 14 credit hours.
3rd semester has 8 credit hours.
Total Credits = ∑ (Credits for all courses).
Total credits after 3 semesters: 10 + 14 + 8 = 32.
Term | Definition | Emphasis | Illustration |
Credits | Numerical value of subject | Subject’s weight | Physics: 4 Credits |
Credit Hours | Teaching effort | Weekly teaching & practical | Physics: 4 hours per week |
Credit Points | Grade Point x Credit Hours | Result | 3 x 2 = 6 |
Total Credits | Sum of completed credit hours | Cumulative weight | 10 (semester 1) + 14 (semester 2) + 8 (semester 3) Total Credits = 32 |
Weighted Grade points.
Grade Point of a course adjusted by its Credit Hours. It accounts for how much each course contributes to overall GPA or CGPA based on its importance (Credit Hours).
Weighted Grade Point = Grade Point x Credit Hours.
The terms Credit Points and Weighted Grade Points are used interchangeably.
Subject | Grade | Grade Points | Credit Hours | Weighted Grade Point |
English | A+ | 4 | 2 | 4 x 2 = 8 |
Physics | B | 3 | 4 | 3 x 4 = 12 |
Total Grade Points.
The sum of all grade points earned across all subjects in a specific academic term (Semester) or throughout the entire academic program (Degree).
They are calculated by multiplying the Grade Point of each course by its corresponding Credit Hours and then summing up these values across all subjects.
Total Grade Points = ∑ (Grade Points x Credit Hours).
Total Grade points in above example are 20: (English 8 + Physics 12).
GPA (Grade Point Average).
GPA is a broad term representing average performance during a specific period, i.e., a semester, academic year, or entire degree program.
GPA = Total Grade Points / Total Credits.
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average).
- A student’s academic performance in a single semester, calculated by averaging grade points across all subjects, weighted by credit hours. The GPA calculated for a semester, measures the performance of a student in a single semester. Each semester’s SGPA contributes to the overall CGPA.
- Formula: SGPA = ∑ (Grade Points of all subjects x Credits of all subjects) / Total Credits in the Semester.
- For example.
- Subject 1: Credit Hours = 4, Grade Points = 3.5,
- Subject 2: Credit Hours = 3, Grade Points = 2.5,
- Subject 3: Credit Hours = 2, Grade Points = 1.5.
- Calculation:
- SGPA = (4×3.5) + (3×2.5) + (2×1.5) / (4+3+2) = 2.72
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average).
- The overall GPA calculated for all the semesters or academic years or the complete degree program, based on the total grade points and total credits earned. CGPA is the overall average of grade points earned across all semesters of an academic program.
- CGPA = ∑ (Total Grade Points of all semesters) / ∑ (Total Credits of all semesters).
- For example.
- Semester 1: Total Credit Hours: 15, SGPA: 3.2.
- Semester 2: Total Credit Hours: 18, SGPA: 2.8.
- Semester 3: Total Credit Hours: 17, SGPA: 3.5.
- The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) = (15 × 3.2) + (18 × 2.8) + (17 × 3.5) / (15 + 18 + 17) = 3.16
How does CGPA to Percentage Converter work?
CGPA i.e., Cumulative Grade Point Average, is a grading method in Indian educational universities used to depict a student’s total academic standing. It may be considered as a report card where instead of grades, it uses a scale that usually goes from 1 to 4, 1 to 5 and 1 to 10. Let’s explain the CGPA calculation:
Individual Subject Grading: A grade point represents marks received or letter grade in numerical form. On a 10-point scale, for example, an A+ might be equivalent to 10, an A to 9, and so on (depending upon institution and varies from college to college).
Credits: Considering the time spent while studying a subject or its significance, each subject is given certain number of credits. Think of the credits as the relative importance of each subject.
Weighted Grade Points: Multiplying Grades with Credits i.e., for every subject, multiply the grade points obtained with the credit points allocated. This gives the weighted grade points.
Sum: Add all of your weighted grade points for the term or complete degree program.
CGPA: Divide the total weighted grade points by the total number of credits for all subjects taken during that time and you obtain your CGPA.
Example to calculate CGPA
Suppose you have grade scores of 7, 8, 6, 9 and 10 in five subjects that have equal credit points (Let us assume here that Credit point for each subject is 1). Multiply each subject by the credits (say, 1 credit each for simplicity). Add them up (40), and divide by the total credits (5). So Your CGPA is 8.
How to Convert CGPA to Percentage
It differs from university to university and to convert CGPA into a percentage, you can multiply it by a specific factor based on the grading scale used by your college. Converting CGPA to Percentage is simple, especially if you have a CGPA to Percentage Converter. You can follow these steps:
- Select the grading system and enter the CGPA in our Calculator.
- Click on the “Calculate” option.
- And here you have it, your percentage with a pie cart.
Now you may think, how is this calculated? Well, to find the percentage for the 10 grading scale, this formula is used: – CGPA × 9.5 = Percent. So, If your CGPA is 8.2, for instance, the computation would be 8.2 × 9.5, or 77.9%. A CGPA of 8.2 is therefore equal to 77.9%.

The Distinction Between GPA and CGPA
As both terms are commonly used in academic grading, it is necessary to comprehend the difference in CGPA and GPA:
GPA (Grade Point Average): This shows the average score for a certain term or semester for a student. Each grade on a scale, correlates to a particular numerical value, which can be either a number or a letter. A grade of A might be equal to 4, a grade of B to 3, and so on.
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average): CGPA measures the overall academic performance of a student in all semesters, calculated by obtaining the mean of the GPA awarded in each semester and dividing it by the total number of credits.
Converting CGPA to GPA
- Simple method used to convert a 10-point CGPA to a 4-point GPA, which is the standard in the USA is as under:
- (CGPA / Maximum Potential CGPA) x 4 = GPA Score is the formula.
- For example, if the highest CGPA in your batch is 8.0 and your CGPA is 6.0, the computation would be (6 / 8) x 4 = GPA of 3.
- Preliminary estimation table for converting a 10-point CGPA to a 4-point GPA is as following:
- 10.0 CGPA is equal to 4.00 GPA (A).
- 9.0 CGPA is equal to 3.68 GPA (A).
- Grade A (8.0 CGPA = 3.36 GPA).
- 3.04 GPA (Grade A) equals 7.0 CGPA.
- 6.0 GPA (Grade B) equals 2.55 CGPA.
- 5.0 CGPA (Grade B) equals 2.05 GPA.
- 4.0 CGPA equals 1.47 GPA (C-minus).
- CGPA in 10-point scale and its corresponding value to a 4-point GPA is shown in this table. However, it’s crucial to note that universities may follow specific conversion procedures, so official assessments should be relied upon for admission.
- Most US universities refer to WES (World Education Services) or their own CGPA-to-GPA conversion chart. A common conversion looks like this:
10-Point CGPA | 4.0 GPA Equivalent |
10.0 – 9.0 | 4.0 |
8.9 – 8.0 | 3.7 – 3.9 |
7.9 – 7.0 | 3.0 – 3.6 |
6.9 – 6.0 | 2.5 – 2.9 |
5.9 – 5.0 | 2.0 – 2.4 |
Below 5.0 | Below 2.0 (Low GPA) |
For a precise conversion, it’s best to check the specific university’s conversion method or use a WES GPA Calculator.
CGPA to Percentage Calculator – Accuracy and Reliability.
