ECU Baseball Earns 10th-Straight ABCA Academic Excellence Award
ECU Baseball continues to set the standard both on the field and in the classroom. The East Carolina baseball program has earned the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award for the 10th consecutive year, the organization announced Wednesday.
This prestigious recognition is awarded to programs maintaining academic excellence throughout the year. In 2024–25, ECU Baseball recorded a program-best 3.72 cumulative GPA, surpassing its previous high of 3.64 set during the 2020–21 academic year. The team has now maintained a 3.41 GPA or higher for eight straight academic cycles.
This academic success comes alongside the team’s impressive athletic performance, including its fourth American Conference Tournament title and seventh consecutive NCAA Regional appearance.
Led by Head Coach Cliff Godwin, a former two-time Academic All-America selection himself, ECU Baseball has made academic achievement a core part of its culture. Under his leadership:
- Over 400 student-athletes have been named to the ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll (3.0 GPA or higher).
- More than 200 players have earned American Conference All-Academic Team honors; including every player on last year’s roster.
Additionally, the program boasts:
- Nine straight American Conference Team Academic Excellence Awards
- The highest team GPA among all American Conference baseball programs since 2015–16
- Seven Academic All-Americans named by College Sports Communicators (CSC) since 2016
Notably, players like Carter Cunningham and Trey Yesavage were named First Team Academic All-Americans in 2024, continuing a strong legacy of academic achievement that includes past stars like Jake Agnos, Matt Bridges, and Alec Burleson.
ECU Baseball’s 10th-straight ABCA award is a testament to the program’s balanced pursuit of both excellence in athletics and academics, raising the bar year after year for what it means to be a student-athlete.
